The sun was setting in all its red, orange, and pink glory, and the ocean was crashing in waves upon the shore. Even though it was summer, because it was evening, the air was chilly. My dad, my brother, and I made our way down the beach towards the shore. My brother's first move was to dart into the cold ocean as my dad and I simply sat in the tan colored sand. It was chilly, relaxing and comfortable. My brother shrieked as the icy water washed over him and he tumbled down as the wave knocked him over. neither my dad nor I spoke...we sat in perfect silence. I dug my hands into the cool sand and watched as it ran over my finger.
"So how do you like the vacation so far?" My dad asked.
"I love it here!" I grinned.
After that we talked about random things and watched the sun set, beautifully. After a couple minutes my dad picked up a stick he had found half buried under the sand and began to draw in the sand. For 15 minutes, he sat concentrating on what he was doing. I found this task to be boring so I stood up, brushed the sand off me and walked towards the water.
"Come play with me!" my brother cried, excited.
Rollihng my eyes, even thouhg I wasnt really annoyed, I trudged into the water, shivering as it enveloped my feet and ankles. I cupped my hands together and filled them with water and splashed it on my brother. He cringed painfully, as the salty water got in his eyes. We continued to play for another five minutes, then I walked out of the ocean. I went over to my dad. His blue swim suit was covered in sand, and like a little boy, he pointed to his creation!
"Look!"
I lowered my eyes to the ground and saw what he had built. A fish. A big one, about three and a half feet long. I thought ut was cute. He was so proud.
"Oh my God, that is adorable! Lets name it!" I suggested.
"Okay! You name it!"
I mused over names in my head. joe, Bob, Fredie, Rosie, Jess...nothing seemed to fit. Then finally I thought of one and it, perfectly. Ari.
Ari is my dad's name. I told him my idea of naming the fish after him and he agreed.
I looked towards the ocean and saw the tide was moving in. Panicking, I pulled clumps of sand towards Ari and tried to build a wall around him.
"Its no use," my dad said. "Nature is going to take over."
For the next few minutes, we tried hard, yet the attempt was futile, to build a wall, until finally the tide came and took Ari the fishie away.
For some odd reason, I felt like I had a strange attachment to the fish and was sad when he dissapeared. My dad was so proud of his creation, and we walked away as the sun completely set and the ocean and the fish were enveloped in complete darkness.
