Samsas' Analysis
Gregor Samsa: is a fictional character in Franz Kafka’s novella, The Metamorphosis. Gregor goes into business as a traveling salesman in order to provide his father, mother, and sister, Grete, with a decent apartment and a comfortable life. One morning, he wakes up to find that he has been transformed into a giant bug. Gregor’s character tries to learn how to live his life emotionally and he struggles to accept his horrible situation.
Grete Samsa: Grete is Gregor's younger sister. Gregor and Grete were very close. He had been saving up money to send her to the Conservatory to study violin. When Gregor turns into a bug, she is the only one that still cares for him and wants to make sure that he has everything he needs. She tries to make sure that his room is clean and that there is enough room for him to move around. As time goes one, and Gregor does not change back into a human, she loses her feelings and begins to leave him alone. Eventually, she thinks that the family should get rid of him.
Mr. Samsa: Mr. Samsa is Gregor's father. He used to have a good job but when his business failed, he became very lazy. He sits around all day not doing anything while Gregor brings in all the money for the family. When Gregor turns into a bug, Mr. Samsa goes to work for the first time in a long time. He does not like or care for Gregor after he turns into a bug and thinks that he is going to somehow hurt the family if he comes out of his room. He hurts Gregor physically and emotionally many times -- one time by shoving him back into his room and the second time by throwing an apple at him.
Mrs. Samsa: Mrs. Samsa is Gregor's mother. When Gregor turns into a bug, she is forced to go work to make some money. She is a loving, caring mother but she has a tendency to faint whenever she sees Gregor in his new state. This doesn’t allow her to be the mother that she usually is. Mrs. Samsa is also very quiet so when she is told to do something, she does it. She doesn’t have a say in what is done and she is hidden by her husband throughout the story.
